The conviction of Derek Chauvin is not an indictment of the white supremacist system that condones the senseless police killings of Black people as they drive their cars, walk home, and live in their communities.
His horrible and horrifying language reproduces broader societal and historical patterns of speech that perpetuate and incite violence and hate against women, especially women of color.
The problems we face are deeply rooted in our history, pervade our present, and will persist into our futures. The battle to confront and work to overcome them requires recognition, determination, perseverance, and collective action.
