We support teacher educators in using practice-based teacher education pedagogies to prepare novice teachers who can use the power of teaching to help children reach ambitious learning goals—all in the pursuit of creating a more just society.

Intertwining teaching practice, content, and justice

We support teacher educators in designing and implementing professional training for teachers that intertwines attention to high-leverage practices of teaching, challenging and powerful academic content and skills, and the pursuit of creating a more just society. By “teacher educators,” we mean not only instructors who are based inside of teacher education programs, but also mentor or cooperating teachers who work primarily in K–12 schools. Curriculum and program audits

TeachingWorks conducts audits of existing teacher education programs to assess extent to which the program is focusing on high-leverage practices and equitable instruction. We provide actionable feedback to program leaders and instructors wishing to make the program more practice-based. We also conduct curriculum reviews and provide feedback on a smaller scale, usually in the context of specific courses. These audits are confidential and intended only for use by program leaders and instructors.

Sustained practice-focused professional development

Our sustained professional development partnerships are multi-year engagements that allow us to offer deep and individualized support for long-lasting change, both in individual courses and across entire teacher preparation programs. The goal of these partnerships, which are co-designed with the participating educators, is to help teacher educators integrate practice-based approaches into their programs, and develop systems and routines that will support ongoing learning and improvement in their programs, after the partnership with TeachingWorks has ended.
