TeachingWorks develops eight numeracy briefs for the New York State Education Department

At a statewide numeracy conference on May 13, 2025, TeachingWorks and the New York State Education Department released a set of eight briefs focused on supporting evidence-based P–12 mathematics teaching practice. The briefs, developed and written by TeachingWorks (led by Director Deborah Loewenberg Ball and Associate Director Nicole Garcia), are grounded in peer-reviewed, evidence-based research from scholars, researchers, and practitioners from various disciplines, including mathematics, teacher education, curriculum design and use, sociology, ethnic studies, developmental psychology, cognitive science, education policy, and psychometrics.

As NYSED states on its website:

The numeracy briefs are grounded in research, written for educators, and provide specific and useful information to support evidence-based P–12 mathematical teaching practice. The numeracy briefs identify the grade level(s) covered and include references to the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards and New York State Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework, and citations to research. The briefs focus on key ideas and myths, high-leverage content and practices, key evidence-based instructional practices, and leading for mathematics proficiency.

The stops are grouped into four categories: key ideas and myths, high-leverage content and practices, key evidence-based instructional practices, and leading for mathematical proficiency.
